Finding an appropriate care facility or home is only one piece of the puzzle.
The first step should be how you will pay for care.
The ALTCS application process can take over 45 days to complete, and that is assuming you know what you are doing and know how to apply.
If you are a wartime Veteran or a Surviving Spouse of a wartime Veteran, this process can take anywhere from two weeks to thirteen months. And that again is assuming you know how to file the VA claim properly, in the first place.

Finding the perfect ALTCS Approved Assisted Living Facilities and ALTCS Approved Group Homes
Finding the appropriate ALTCS Approved Assisted Living Facilities or ALTCS approved Group Homes in az can be difficult.
Here is why.
All listings on ALTCS.org, as of January 2024, accept ALTCS. If the ALTCS Approved Assisted Living Community or Group Home takes someone already on ALTCS or ALTCS Pending, is missing from the listings.
Many of the Approved ALTCS Assisted Living communities, and Group homes require that the person “Private Pay” for a while. They often require anywhere from three months to 36 months before accepting ALTCS as a payor for that person.
We don’t list if an ALTCS Provider accepts someone on ALTCS immediately because that is constantly changing. How long the ALTCS Assisted Living requires that they private pay changes based on the available space in the assisted living.
I remember one case that I worked on needed to be approved as fast as I could get it done. The care facility had opened three beds in the memory area for someone ALTCS pending.
Usually, this place requires that the person private pays for three years. So one of my resource partners called me and asked me to help get them approved quickly.
The person was already approved medically and was denied ALTCS benefits due to being financially over-resourced. So I helped correct the financial issue and got approved by ALTCS in 4 working days!
It is important to note that the daughter was referred to a Certified Placement and Referral Specialist. A CPRS will help cut through ALTCS Approved Assisted Living Communities and Group Care Homes clutter and help her find the perfect place.
This temporary change in the requirements by this ALTCS Approved Memory care facility wasn’t commonly known information available to everyone. They contacted a hand full of key resource partners to let them know and to see if they had someone that might fit the community.
Had the person been trying to find a place on their own, they might have never known of this perfect place.
Private Pay vs. ALTCS Pay
Will my mother receive inadequate care in an ALTCS approved assisted living facility vs. one that is 100% private pay?
This is a common question that I answer on a daily basis.
First of all, understand you can check to see if an ALTCS approved assisted living community or a non-ALTCS approved assisted living community has any fines or discrepancies levied against them.
The Arizona Department of Health Services post all this information on their website at: See here – https://hsapps.azdhs.gov/ls/sod/SearchProv.aspx?type=AL
There you can type in a facility provider name or a location or provider type, and it will list all the providers that match the search criteria.
Then you can see firsthand any enforcement actions.
You can also see how many complaints have been investigated by the Arizona Department of Health Services.
Noteworthy is a provider with many complaints dismissed or not may indicate some underlining management issues by the provider.
This brings up a better question: “Will my mother receive inadequate care in an ALTCS approved assisted living vs. 100% private pay?”
“How can I ensure that my mother will receive good care at an ALTCS Approved Assisted Living Facilities?”
Two points to note here. They are word of mouth and, most importantly YOU!
Here is why I say you.
Tip #1:
The quality of care is directly proportional to your involvement in your loved ones’ care.
Meaning that if you only drop by once a week to check on your mother, and you always come at 2:30 pm on Thursday. Then the group home will be sure that your mother’s appropriately dressed, her hair combed, and she is comfortable at that time because they know you are coming to see her at that time.
On the other hand, if you show up at odd times with no pattern, they will make sure she is appropriately dressed, her hair combed, and she is comfortable all the time.
This makes sense, doesn’t it?
Tip #2:
Ask the ALTCS approved assisted living facility or ALTCS approved group home manager in az if you have to make an appointment or schedule a visit? That is a signal it may be time to move your loved one to a different place.
What are they hiding? Check their Arizona Department of Health Services deficiencies.
Did they recently get fined?
Before you overreact, talk with the provider and find out what happened and what they are doing to prevent this from happening again.
Tip #3:
Don’t ask the ALTCS Approved Assisted Living Facility or ALTCS Approved Group Home management how to qualify for ALTCS.
Yes, that is what I just said; “Don’t ask them for help!”
This is because they receive less money from that State of Arizona when you or a loved one is approved for ALTCS.
ALTCS approved assisted living group home owners and Assisted Living administrators/managers are not legally bound by any financial fiduciary standards.
Meaning they are not bound to do what is in your financial best interest.
Whereas a Certified Medicaid Planner™ must do what is in the client’s best interest.
Tip #4:
Don’t call ALTCS – AHCCCS for advice.
First, they are not supposed to guide the public on qualifying.
Second, do you go to the IRS or your tax professional for tax advice? No, of course, you don’t. So why would you ask ALTCS caseworkers and employees how to qualify for ALTCS?
Tip #5:
Apply for ALTCS as soon as you can become eligible.
The application process can take much as 90 days to complete.
So the sooner you apply, the better. But at the same time applying when before you’re
eligible can extend the process even longer.
Hiring a Certified Medicaid Planner™ early on can take this mystery off the table.
They will be able to assess your situation and make sure that your assets and the
health assessment will go as planned and you will be approved the first time.
TIP #6:
Don’t let a Social Worker start the ALTCS Application.
That’s right, don’t let the Social Worker at the re-hab or hospital start an application
on your behalf.
Social Workers have no training on asset conversion strategies. All they do by opening
an ALTCS application prematurely is cause additional delays.
Specifically, ask them not to call ALTCS on your behalf.

- Hire a Certified Medicaid Planner™, a CMP™, will help to determine if you qualify and what steps need to be taken for you to qualify.
- Find a Certified Placement and Referral Specialist, and they are a free service. They get paid by the community or group home that you decide to move to.
- Decide on an ALTCS Approved Assisted Living Community or ALTCS Approved Group Homes in az.
- Start the application process with your CMP™.
- Be approved for ALTCS.
